Can't Stay Away

No matter how excited I am about summer vacation, I can never stay away from my classroom for long.  My hallway was the first hallway cleaned which means that I'm already able to get back in my room.  We have to move everything out for our custodians to wax our floors, but they do move everything back in our rooms as soon as the floors dry. It's always a little overwhelming to walk into the room  and see everything in a big pile in the center of the room.

I spent almost an entire day arranging my furniture.  I've had the same setup for the past few years and felt the need for a change, so it took me a while to decide what I wanted.  My room is a challenge, because it is tiny, very, very tiny.  There are lots of things I want that are just not feasible.  When I started arranging my room, I first thought about the areas that I don't have a choice about.

One of those areas is my computer table, because that is the only place that I can hook the computers up to the school network.  The other area is for my Smartboard.  I just got my rug in January, and I absolutely LOVE it!  It's so nice having a place for my students to gather together for our mini lessons and closings.  After setting up my computers and Smarboard area I arranged by desk and small group area.

The mailbox system on the front of my desk is my absolute favorite piece of furniture.  My husband built it for me last year, and I don't know how I ever taught without it!  I would love to have a kidney table for small groups, but I can't remember the last time my school bought new furniture.  I'm going to buy a small white board to screw in the wall behind my small group table, because I use this area for math groups all of the time.
Last but not least, I crammed all of my desks in the room.  I like groups of 4 because I do think, pair, share very frequently, as well as partner and group work.  I know it still looks messy, because all of my smaller goodies are still packed up, and I have all of my bookshelves and bulletin boards covered.  I've only organized the big stuff at this point, but I'm excited to start on the fun, little things.

  1. I love the mailbox system your husband built. I also love the design and colors on your rug. Very cute. I thought about screwing in a whiteboard to the wall behind my reading table a while back too but instead I bought a tabletop easel. I'm glad I did because I like to be able to move it to the carpet if I want and I can put my reading strategies bulletin board right behind my reading table. I've seen a post recently about a teacher who had Home Depot cut shower board very cheap to create a large whiteboard as well. Good luck. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  2. I do worry about the permanence of screwing it in the wall. In the past I've always used this huge thing on wheels, but it just took up too much room. I hadn't thought about a tabletop easel. I may look into that.

  3. How lucky that you are able to get into school! My principal is being very strict with us this summer, we "merged" with another school and have a lot of new staff and people moving classrooms. He doesn't want people "shopping" in other classrooms plus we live in AZ and it is waaaaay to hot to go in without AC. I just want to get started on my Chicka Chicka 123 math/calendar wall!

  4. We aren't allowed in our buildings until two weeks before school starts, so you are lucky! :-) Your classroom is looking great, and I agree, I love the mailboxes! We aren't allowed to screw into our walls, but I know a teacher who uses those 3M hanging strips and is pretty happy with them.

  5. When does your school year begin? We have only been out a week. The students come back after Labor Day. I am not ready to go back even if I could.

  6. Mary, We've been out for over a month. Our students' last day was May 20th. I don't blame you-I have to decompress for a while. I was excited to get back though, I had just finished painting my room, so I wanted to see how it would look with my furniture :)
