My open house scavenger hunt was a great success! It was a great way for me to meet everyone in a little more relaxed atmosphere than usual. I think my students and their parents really enjoyed it.
The first week of school we did our 3rd Day in 3rd Grade activity, which was a ton of fun! All of the ruler task cards were my students' favorites this year!
We've gotten started with our math journals, and I am thrilled with my bound notebooks. They're a hit with my students, and I absolutely love reading their responses. You can get so much insight into how students think with these journals! I always allow a few students to share them using our document camera.
I'm almost finished teaching my students how to complete our Number of the Day morning work. I only teach one section a day until I've covered all of the questions, so the first few weeks are slow. For example, on the first day of school I taught how to complete the expanded form and written form section, so on the second day of school, students only completed those two sections. Then I taught them how to complete the place value table. The following day, they would complete only the three sections I had taught them how to complete. It's the only method that has really worked for me in effectively introducing number of the day. After I teach each section, I'll them have my students complete the top half one day and the bottom half the following day. Otherwise, I use up too many copies during the year.
