After a lot of thought, I decided to ability group my students through their seating arrangement. I'm extending place value for my 12 students who have already mastered the third grade standards with Place Value Detectives from Teaching With a Mountain View. I bought it last week, and it was awesome! My students had fun, were challenged, but could work on it independently.
I used my own Splash Into Place Value unit with the remainder of my students who did need place value instruction. I know there's a lot of debate with homogeneous grouping vs heterogeneous grouping, but this is what worked for me. I was very sensitive to how I handled the groups and feel certain that everyone was happy with what they were doing. It was one of those magical moments when everything worked the way I wanted it to.
Don't you just love the feeling of having a whole extra day to get things accomplished during the weekend! It was so nice to not have the pressure of having to get lesson plans ready for the week. It pretty much rained all day today, so I went ahead and finished my lesson plans, so that if tomorrow's nice I can enjoy the whole day outside!
I've added links to several of the images, so hopefully these are a little more user friendly than the previous two weeks' lesson plans. I'm really excited to try out the two new geography units I purchased, and I'll have to share more about them after I try them out! Next week, we'll get started on work stations, so I'll have a little more to add in that section. This week, we're still working on little odds and ends, such as how to correctly complete morning work, and how to play some of the games that will be later added to work stations.
Be sure to visit Mrs. Wills for the weekly link up!
