Thank you so much for sharing this list! I cant wait to add some of these to my read aloud list! (If you haven't read The One and Only Ivan, you should because it is voted my 3rd graders' favorite book of the year for the last 3 years in a row! It is fantastic for teaching point of view, figurative language, and character analysis.)

Something fast paced and exciting, with a possible mystery? I recommend "Danger in Quicksand Swamp" by Bill Wallace. I haven't read it for a few years since I co-teach my class and my teaching partner usually reads a novel to the class but when I have read it, my grade 4s and 5s loved it!

My current favorites are "Love That Dog" and "Hate That Cat" by Sharon Creech, which I use in conjunction with a poetry unit. I use these two novels in alternate years since I teach a combined Grade 4/5 class and have some students for two years.

We read The Wild Robot for the first time this year.It was a HUGE hit with our class. We could tie it in with so many 4th grade standards-ecosystems, character growth and change throughout the book, descriptive vocabulary, voice and point of view, "show, don't tell"...the list could go on and one. It ends with a cliff hanger so our students wrote the next chapter. We loved how they really connected earlier parts of the book and mimicked the author's voice and style so it really felt like the next chapter!

For the last several years, I have started the year off with Wonder. It is my favorite! Last year, I decided to try something new. I read Out of My Mind. My class was SO into it! It was a great book! I definitely recommend it.

Holes is so wonderful! I love it when my kids put all of the pieces together! I also read There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by the same author at the beginning of the year. It's a good story about friendships and believing in yourself and what those things can do. But Island of the Blue Dolphins is another phenomenal read. It's about a Native American girl who ends up trying to survive by herself on her home Island. It's a great story to show change over time and how our experiences can change our thought processes. My students love it every year.

The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen is the first in a trilogy and my kiddos LOVED it. The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier is fantasy/mystery and another one my kids loved.
Kate Messner has a series with four recurring kids that are always trying to solve a mystery. The first in the series is Capture the Flag. Also Wake Up Missing and Eye of the Storm are good ones from her, too.

I have a whole list, but these are just a few.

Thank you for your list of favorites. You included a few I haven't read yet, so I'm off to the library to check them out. I just finished reading Gregor The Overlander by Suzanne Collins. It was a very exciting and mysterious book, so I suggest checking that one out if you haven't already.
