Looking for math warm-ups that are digital, editable, and proven to help students develop their number sense? Then look no further!

This resource includes over 400 pages of activities that promote number sense and math reasoning.

Number sense is critical for math understanding. Without number sense, it is difficult for students to compute and to find relationships within numbers or equations. Students need visual, perceptual, and conceptual understandings of quantities to understand numbers relationships, to work flexibly with numbers, and to reason with numbers. Number sense is what allows students to master more challenging math standards such as multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals.

As an upper elementary teacher, I once thought these activities, especially subitizing, unitizing, and counting, were primarily geared toward the lower elementary grades. However, I soon learned that they can also play an important role in developing number sense in the upper elementary classroom.

This resource is meant to be used as a math warm-up. Students should gather together as a whole group. Each day students will complete a different type of activity. These activities consistently spiral and increase in difficulty as the year progresses. Of course, it’s best to specifically tailor your instruction to your students’ needs, so this resource is 100% editable.

The search for research based, effective, and meaningful upper elementary math interventions is over! Over the years I’ve found plenty of math assessments, computer practice programs, and other practice activities for my math intervention groups, but it was incredibly challenging and time consuming to find meaningful teaching activities that pinpointed and corrected students’ conceptual gaps and misunderstandings. These intervention lessons are the culmination of years of research, implementation, and modifications to my RTI lessons.

This intervention curriculum was specifically designed for upper elementary students who need additional math instruction in order to be successful in mastering essential math standards. This curriculum was not designed for students who simply need a bit of extra instruction, time, or practice. Instead, this curriculum was designed for upper elementary students who experience difficulty with number sense, generalizing math concepts, have significant gaps in their math understanding, and are having difficulty keeping up with and understanding their current math curriculum. This may be used as a part of your small group math instruction, math interventions, or math RTI.

This is a very flexible and versatile math intervention curriculum and is best used with small group lessons. The lessons are based on approximately 20 minutes of instruction, but more time can certainly be added to that instruction. Each lesson is broken into three components: review, focus lesson, and practice. There is a similar routine for each lesson to allow the lessons to flow quickly and to provide predictability for students. The review and practice are both very short components to the lesson, because the bulk of the lesson is focused on instruction during the focus lesson. This is NOT a series of practice or review worksheets, as the lessons focus on interaction and discussion with a little practice mixed in. You may teach the topics in any order and skip around to reflect your math curriculum. However, it is not necessary for these lessons to match your current math workshop lessons. I find that I often need to address gaps in student understanding before students are able to access their grade level curriculum. These lessons emphasize conceptual understanding and each topic’s lessons build upon the next for increased difficulty.

Standards Taught

4.NF.5. Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100.4 For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and add 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100.

4.NF.6. Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.

4.NF.7. Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.

Standards Taught

Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two column table. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor. Represent and interpret data.

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection. Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles.

Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:

a. An angle is measured with reference to a circle with its center at the common endpoint of the rays, by considering the fraction of the circular arc between the points where the two rays intersect the circle. An angle that turns through 1/360 of a circle is called a “one-degree angle,” and can be used to measure angles.

b. An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees.

Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.

Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems.

Lessons Include: standard, materials, mini lesson, work time, closing, intervention, extension, essential questions, and formative assessments.
