This resource includes over 400 pages of activities that promote number sense and math reasoning.

Number sense is critical for math understanding. Without number sense, it is difficult for students to compute and to find relationships within numbers or equations. Students need visual, perceptual, and conceptual understandings of quantities to understand numbers relationships, to work flexibly with numbers, and to reason with numbers. Number sense is what allows students to master more challenging math standards such as multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals.

As an upper elementary teacher, I once thought these activities, especially subitizing, unitizing, and counting, were primarily geared toward the lower elementary grades. However, I soon learned that they can also play an important role in developing number sense in the upper elementary classroom.

This resource is meant to be used as a math warm-up. Students should gather together as a whole group. Each day students will complete a different type of activity. These activities consistently spiral and increase in difficulty as the year progresses. Of course, it’s best to specifically tailor your instruction to your students’ needs, so this resource is 100% editable.

Have you watched your students simply guess at word problems or consistently revert to the operation they are most comfortable with? I’d venture to guess that most of us have! That’s I love implementing numberless word problems.

In numberless word problems, all numbers are removed temporarily while students process what the situation is and determine what information is needed to solve the problem. Then, numbers are revealed until a solution is reached. These problems allow students to spend time focusing on the context of the problem. Removing the numbers prevents students from trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the problem.

These word problems focus on one type of word problem each week. There are five slides for each of the following types of word problems. If you view the slides in slide show mode, you will be able to reveal one portion of the problem at a time. I have also included a paper version of each of the problems below.

When beginning this strategy, one of my greatest concerns was how I would implement this AND number talks. After considerable planning, I decided that I would incorporate these numberless word problems and number talks into one lesson. Hopefully, this planning will save you HOURS of time! If you don’t utilize number talks, don’t worry! You can simply omit that portion of the lesson. Each week students focus on one type of word problem and one number talk strategy. The numbers I have selected for the word problem will lend themselves to a number talk using that particular strategy.

Since this resource is best completed with the teacher, I did not include answer keys.

Version 1

Write in word form. Students should write the Fraction of the Day in written form. How many more parts do you need to make a whole? Students should determine how many more parts to their fraction need to be added to the fraction in order to have one whole.

• How many parts of the whole are counted? Students identify the numerator of the fraction.
• How many parts are there in a whole? Students identify the denominator of the fraction.
• Represent with an area model. Students may draw any shape and partition and shade in the correct number of pieces.
• Represent the fraction on a number line. Students should correctly label the number line and identify the Fraction of the Day on the number line.
• Write two fractions with similar numerators that are greater than the Fraction of the Day. Students may write any two fractions that are greater, answers will vary.
• Write two fractions with similar denominators that are greater than the Fraction of the Day. Students may write any two fractions that are greater, answers will vary.
• Write two fractions with similar numerators that are less than the Fraction of the Day. Students may write any two fractions that are less than the Fraction of the Day, answers will vary.
• Write two fractions with similar denominators that are less than the Fraction of the Day. Students may write any two fractions that are less. In some noted situations, there will only be one possible answer.
• Decompose the fraction into unit fractions. Students will add 1/a until they reach the sum of the Fraction of the Day.
• Write two equivalent fractions. Students may use any strategy to generate two equivalent fractions to the Fraction of the Day.
• Partition two different shapes into the correct number of pieces to represent the number of parts of the Fraction of the Day. Students should try to draw a variety of shapes and partition them into equal parts.

Version 2

Use repeated addition to show how to multiply the Fraction of the Day by a given whole number.

• What are the next three multiples of the Fraction of the Day? Students should list three multiples.
• Subtract the Fraction of the Day from a given fraction. It is up you whether or not you have students reduce the fractions.
• Add the Fraction of the Day to a given fraction.
• Students identify the missing number in a multiplication equation where a whole number, multiplied by the missing fraction, equals a given fraction.
• Write one fraction with a different numerator that is greater than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different denominator that is greater than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different numerator that is less than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different denominator that is less than the Fraction of the Day
• Decompose the fraction into unit fractions.-Students will add 1/a until they reach the sum of the Fraction of the Day.
• Decompose the fraction two different ways.-Students should use a variety of addition number sentences to decompose the fraction. In cases where the only way to decompose the fraction is by unit fraction, the question is changed to represent the fraction on a number line.
• Write two equivalent fractions.-Students may use any strategy to generate two equivalent fractions to the Fraction of the Day.

Version 3

Convert the Fraction of the Day to a mixed number.

• Model the Fraction of the Day. Students’ models should correctly reflect the mixed number.
• Subtract the Fraction of the Day from a given fraction with an unlike denominator. If is up to you rather or not you have students reduce the answer to simplest form.
• Add the Fraction of the Day to a given fraction with an unlike denominator.
• Solve a fraction multiplied by a fraction problem.
• Write one fraction with a different numerator that is greater than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different denominator that is greater than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different numerator that is less than the Fraction of the Day.
• Write one fraction with a different denominator that is less than the Fraction of the Day
• Show the Fraction of the Day on a number line. Whole numbers should be marked.

As my curriculum and instructional challenges increase, I am constantly seeking ways to integrate my curriculum and standards. This product was created to make the integration of social studies, science, and even a little research a bit easier for teachers. These STEM or STEAM activities are centered around major events in United States history. Hopefully, these lessons will not only engage students and encourage critical thinking, but will also allow students to  understand and appreciate these historical events on a deeper level.

What’s Included
Each activity comes with detailed teacher notes, an explanation of how the activity relates to the historical event, a suggested materials list, a suggested list of websites for further exploration, and example photos. There is also a two page printable for students. I have used the same format for each of the printables, so that students will quickly become adjusted to your expectations and procedures. The printable will take students through the complete design process. The first page of the printable is used to get students started with the activity. It explains the directions and gives students the parameters in which they will be working, as well as guide students through research questions. You may use the second page of the activity if you plan to have students test and revise their design, which is part of the STEM/STEAM process.

Escape rooms and breakout classrooms have found their way into today’s elementary classroom! They are such a great way to increase student engagement and to promote collaborative learning. This holiday escape activity is a perfect way to celebrate with FUN end of the year activities.

Here’s what’s included:

• Teacher Directions: including a link to a detailed blog post with example set-up pictures.
• Student Directions: easy to understand and student friendly.
• Clue 1: To prove that you belong on the nice list, you’ll need to sing a few Christmas carols. Decipher the picture clues to determine which 12 carols to sing. Write the title of the song that each card represents on your recording sheet.
• Clue 2: Santa accidentally jumbled up his Christmas list. Help him by finding the hidden words on the list. The letters that are NOT used will give you the next clue
• Clue 3: Help Santa find what number goes at the top of his tree. You should add side-by-side numbers and write the sum of those numbers on the hexagon above that number. The number at the top is your code!
• Clue 4: To help Santa organize his supplies, you need to match the Christmas items on the Christmas puzzle. To complete the 3-by-3 puzzle, you should reconstruct the squares so that all of the images match on every interior side. Remember, you are making a square. Once you complete the puzzle, use the top three images and the decoder wheel to crack the code!
• These puzzles are not specific to any standard or grade level. Instead, this version is centered around critical thinking skills.

This project contains a collection of problem solving activities that can be used across multiple grade levels. Each of the four activities has a back-to-school focus (team building, procedures, cooperation, etc.) that will engage and excite all students. This is a modified escape room activity, since it’s the beginning of the year and students are still learning classroom routines and procedures. There are several editable options to allow the activities to follow your personal classroom rules and procedures.

Here’s what’s included:

• Student Directions: Easy to understand and student friendly.
• Clue 1: Students must all work together to complete the puzzle together. The pictures in the puzzle do not provide help, so this puzzle will be a bit challenging for students.
• Clue 2: Everyone wants to feel respected, so it’s important to use good social skills throughout the year. For this clue there are 12 different social situations where
  students should work with their group to determine what they should do in that situation. When students finish writing their responses, they will bring the recording sheet to the teacher to get a maze that will allow them to find the 3-digit code.
• Clue 3: Students will find members of their group who have completed the activities on the BINGO board and write their name on the line below the activity. Each group
  member must be on the board at least once. When students have a BINGO when they have 5 in a row, column, or diagonally. When they have a BINGO, bring you the
  recording sheet to get the Clue 3 code.
• Clue 4: In this activity, students review some of their classroom rules and procedures. Students will circle the correct option for each of the procedures. The letters circled are the letters needed for the 5-letter lock.This activity is 100% editable.

Division Content

• Clue 1: Students solve each of the division problems. After students divide, they find the quotient on the bottom of the recording sheet. Students will place the letter on the problem on top of the corresponding quotient.
• Clue 2: The numbers on the table are being used as dividends in division problems. Students should color in all numbers that will be certain to have a remainder-no matter what the divisor for the problem is. Students should not try to solve every possible division problem. Instead, have students think about divisibility rules and use the process of elimination.
• Clue 3: Students should solve each of the division problems where the student must interpret what to do with the remainder of the word problem. There are three answer choices at the bottom of each card. Students will select the best choice and write down the corresponding letter. Students then unscramble the letters to find your next clue.
• Clue 4: Students should solve each of the problems on the Clue 4 cards. These problems all consistent of area models or box models of division problems with missing numbers. After students determine the five answers, they place the cards in order from the smallest answer to the greatest answer. This is the order of the letters for the 5-letter lock.

In this end of year escape room, students must escape the school in order to go on summer vacation. Escape rooms increase student engagement and to promote collaborative learning. This is a perfect way to culminate your year with FUN end of the year activities.

Here’s what’s included:

• Clue 1-It’s time to help the art teacher clean up her materials. She displayed word puzzles (rebus puzzles) on the wall, and before she can remove the puzzles from the wall, you must solve for the hidden meaning inside each puzzle. Write the phrase that each picture represents on the recording sheet.
• Clue 2-Help your P.E. coach fill out the certificates for Field Day. You will need to complete the field day logic puzzle to open the next lock.
• Clue 3-You will use some of your favorite books to complete the next challenge. You will receive library cards for overdue books. To return the correct books, you must determine which section of the library the book belongs.
• Clue 4-Clean out your desk/locker/cubby…whatever it is you keep your things in while at school. To clean out your supplies, you need to match the supplies with the supply puzzle. To complete the puzzle, you should reconstruct the squares so that all of the images match on every interior side. Once you complete the puzzle, use the top three images and the decoder wheel to crack the code!
