Survival Mode: End of the Year

May 11, 2013 by Ashleigh | 1 Comment

During the end of the year, teachers are swamped with DIBELS, DRA, portfolios, inventory lists, etc. so we want as many easy prep activities as possible!

In this end of the year pack, there are 15 activities that are truly different from the same old things I’ve been doing for years. Now that they’re bad…I just need to change things up to keep myself excited about school.  The great news is that only three of the 15 activities require extra preparation: Summer Fun task cards, Top Five List, and the ABC Book, and that prep is minimal!
In one activity, students fill out a report card. The catch is that they’re the evaluator, and they get to grade the teacher and/or their school. I obviously didn’t want students just writing down grades in 15 seconds, so they will have to explain why they gave the grades they selected.
I’ve included a summer themed sudoku puzzle and a logic puzzle, because those are always fun, especially when I need something fast! I love the advice letter, which is a classic end of the year activity. I included one blank template, but I also included a template with several sentence starters. I’ve found that the sentence starters help keep my students’ letters on track. Otherwise, they can become fairly random.
We ALL go into survival mode at the end of the year -- just those last couple of weeks that we have to get through so we can enjoy summer break! One of my favorite ways to culminate what we’ve learned in social studies and science is through a class textbook. I let students work with partners and assign each group a different topic. Students work with their partners to create two pages to insert in our class textbook. These are such a great way to showcase student work! I always laminate and bind them.

There’s an ABC book about summer and a fun little activity, where students find how many words they can make out the of the word ‘summer vacation’.

The summer word search is always a hit, and my students LOVE playing guess the word. It’s perfect for when you have a couple extra minutes, and your students are restless. Summer song synonyms is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE activity in this pack. I use during our last day of school party, and I let parents help their children. It’s always a hoot!
The top five list is a great end of the year activity! It definitely encourages reflective thinking, and it creates a nice keepsake for students.

Visions of My Summer Vacation is always a fun activity, because let’s face it….that’s what we’re all thinking about right now!

The summer schedule activity is fun and incorporates a little elapsed time. I also really like having students write thank you notes to their teachers, friends, and family, because we’ve all had a lot of help during the year.

Another project I recently completed  is a class memory book.  I plan to have my students complete two or three pages a day for the remainder of the year.  I’m printing my memory books as a booklet, so I don’t have to use a gazillion sheets of paper. Although, I do like the look of full size pages….decisions, decisions. You can check it out on TpT.
